Study to ID a person by texting style

Researchers at the University of Leicester (UK) are undertaking a study to determine if it might be possible to recognize an individual by their texting style. The psychologists involved plan to use linguistic analysis on text submitted by volunteers who will participate over the Internet.

This makes sense because certain things like educational background and dialect can be determined in a text fashion. Some people don't use any capital letters or punctuation at all when they type and others sink into their obsessive-compulsive side and make everything perfect. Vocabulary could also be a factor.

I'm not a specialist in this field (forensic linguistics) but your observations seem very reasonable and, I expect, are accurate.

FYI, since the original post, I believe that there has been at least one court case that has made it into the online media that involved a person allegedly trying to impersonate a victim by sending falsified texts from the victim's phone. The alleged perpetrator's text message style ended up being detectably different than the victim's. At least that is how my recollection goes. I'll try to find a published reference to this case and post a follow up if I can.
